concept

It is not always but most of time one's identity can be reflected on his or her facial expression and sometimes we judge people just with that. However, does facial expression reflect what they really feel, think and want to tell? I guess it doesn’t. I think people usually has hidden facial expression in other words fake one to protect themselves from unnecessary interference with others. The concealed emotion (facial expression) can only be seen when there is no one but him or herself. Therefore, I think that identities can be revealed through the hidden facial expression.

Basically the main page will have photos of faces that contain recognizable emotions in facial expression like the above image. However I’ll not restrict them with just hidden facial expression, so fake facial expression may be used as well. I haven’t decided how the arrangement of photos is going to be, but when the viewer clicks certain face it leads to page that may explore or show about it with photos, texts or videos. It may possible to extend learning about personality or character related to each facial expression as well. These following pages will vary depends on its facial expression. In visual of the page, I’m still not sure what it is going to be but I’m posting my thoughts with drawings.

Possible design for main pages

My design is fairly simple because I'm not competent in Flash and Dreamweaver. I got some idea about layout of my design from the website that I did researched on week 5. I know I can't create a website like that at this stage, but I'll try to learn myself about some softwares I need, practice and try hard to develop my design.

wk5-class exercise

This is the work from the class done by me and my friend.

Website

Website: Field Operations - Landscape Architecture Company by James Corner

Homepage

Revolving bars

Classified by categories

Work shown

I like little bars which are revolving and showing their work dynamically. They used limited kinds of colours which looks very clear and modern. I’m not sure whether it’s their intention or not, I feel like something is missing and emptiness in the site, so I get a feeling of coldness, not the warmth. I think introducing of more colours could make this website more ‘welcome’ feeling.

Question a. whether it falls into design and/or art (and why)

I think it does fall into art and design because they arranged their work with little bars by categories which looks simple and clear. They also simplified menus and colours of its site with only green, black and white which provides easy reading of what they’ve done so far. The most interesting and eye-catching part of this site is revolving bars which gives me a feeling of dynamic and energetic. It basically shows their work, studio staffs and introduces what they do. Under the studio and work menu, these bars are classified into chronology, scale, typology, alphabetical order, people, profile and news. For example, if I click alphabetical order, these bars arranged right away.

Question b. how it relates to other art/design forms on the web

Comparing with other sites or personal blogs, this website has some kind of geometrical aspects and feelings in arrangements of its site. They also have a clear looking layout and presentation of their work, so it helps clients and themselves to understand the company’s design intent. Moreover, this site is focused on showing their work, what they are doing and trying to do in the future and I think it has much less commercial stuff on its site than other companies’ sites, so that the main purpose of the website can not be lost by business and money. This actually allows viewer to concentrate the contents of its site, not the garbage stuff.

Question c. how it may reflect in content or style your final project

For my final project, some aspects of this website can be influential. I think the simple arrangement of their work and geometrical layouts have some potential to be part of my project. In fact, I’m still looking for what to do for my project so I can’t tell how much content or style I’m going to use from this site, but I definitely got some great ideas from this exercise.

I did research about "Identity on the Internet" and found some images in relation with it. I discovered interesting but not pleased aspects of identity on the internet.

Usually internet users leave their comments or thoughts about blogs or news at the end of them and I assume that everyone who used internet at least once has this kind of experiences. However, I noticed that most of people leave their comments which criticises and attacks someone's blog or opinion and it always leads to serious fight and swearing among the people. I guess their behavior comes from anonymous and unidentified aspects of identity on the internet, so they think they can not be caught even if they attack people on the internet.

Moreover, accuracy of the information is not always provided by internet users so it often make people falls a victim to fraud.

I haven't been able to post some works because I've been insanely busy from my studio work.

In the last few tutorials, we were asked to discuss ideas about our final project but I'm still researching it related to "Identity". The person I talked with had a clear idea of his project which was "Identity" that has a connection between music and colours. He thinks every genre of music has own colour and i think it strongly gives me an idea of what he's trying to do.

We also did some exercise with Photoshop and Dreamweaver tutorials and learned how to deal with tables, images, hyperlinks and etc. These images are exercise work from the class and we created two images by using text combined with a selection of photos.

Hello

This is a second week of web art and design class. We discussed about identity and learned basic skills for Dreamweaver. I'm looking forward to learn more in this class!
